Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Public Health
  • Clinical Psychology

Background:

  • Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a known risk factor for suicide in adolescents.
  • Research on NSSI and suicide risk in adult medical patients is limited.
  • Adult medical patients represent a vulnerable population with increased suicide risk.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between a lifetime history of NSSI and suicide risk.
  • To describe this association within an adult medical inpatient setting.

Main Methods:

  • Cross-sectional analysis of 621 adult medical inpatients from four US hospitals.
  • Suicide risk assessed using the Ask Suicide-Screening Questions (ASQ).
  • Lifetime NSSI history, methods, frequency, and severity evaluated via a structured interview.

Main Results:

  • 5.8% of patients reported a lifetime history of NSSI.
  • 16.1% of patients screened positive for suicide risk.
  • Patients with a history of NSSI were significantly more likely to screen positive for suicide risk (OR = 9.4).

Conclusions:

  • Adult medical inpatients with a history of NSSI exhibit significantly higher suicide risk.
  • Findings underscore the importance of assessing NSSI in adult medical patients for suicide risk detection.
  • Further research is needed to understand causal relationships and inform prevention strategies.
