A rare complication of Meckel's diverticulum occurred in an 11-year-old girl, presenting as a rectal mass and intestinal obstruction. Surgical intervention successfully treated the Meckel's diverticulum invading the rectum.
Area of Science:
- Pediatric Surgery
- Gastroenterology
- Congenital Anomalies
Background:
- Meckel's diverticulum is a congenital anomaly of the small intestine.
- Complications are typically related to bleeding, obstruction, or intussusception.
- Rectal involvement is exceptionally uncommon.
Observation:
- An 11-year-old girl presented with abdominal distension, pain, and vomiting.
- A rectal mass and prolapsing bowel loops were noted during examination.
- Radiology confirmed intestinal obstruction.
Findings:
- Surgical exploration revealed Meckel's diverticulum invading the rectum.
- Dense inter-bowel adhesions were also present.
- A fistula between Meckel's diverticulum and the rectum was identified.
Implications:
- This case underscores the rare possibility of Meckel's diverticulum causing rectal fistulas.
- Early diagnosis and surgical management are crucial for favorable outcomes.
- Highlights the importance of considering rare presentations of common congenital anomalies.

Large Intestine
The ileocecal sphincter, a mucous membrane fold, guards the opening from the ileum to the large intestine. This valve permits material from the small intestine to pass into the large intestine. Attached to the ileocecal valve is the cecum. This small pouch, approximately 6 cm long, has a twisted, coiled tube known as...
