A rare case of giant adrenal calcification caused sudden epigastric pain in a 57-year-old woman. Surgical resection of the calcified mass resolved the pain, highlighting this rare condition.
Area of Science:
- Endocrinology
- Radiology
- Abdominal Surgery
Background:
- Giant adrenal calcification is a rare condition.
- Idiopathic adrenal calcification presents diagnostic challenges.
Observation:
- A 57-year-old female presented with sudden epigastric pain.
- Abdominal CT revealed a large (7.8 × 5.4 × 7.1 cm) calcified mass in the hepatorenal recess, identified as primary giant adrenal calcification after excluding secondary causes.
Findings:
- Surgical resection of the right adrenal gland and calcified mass was performed.
- The patient experienced complete pain relief post-surgery.
- No recurrence was observed during a 6-month follow-up period.
Implications:
- This case underscores the potential of giant adrenal calcification to cause acute abdominal pain.
- Further case reports are necessary to elucidate the etiology, pathogenesis, and optimal management of idiopathic adrenal calcification.
