This review identified 85 nursing quality indicators (NQIs) for emergency nursing, focusing on structure, process, and outcome measures. However, the validation of these NQIs requires further research to ensure reliable quality assessment.
Area of Science:
- Nursing Quality Indicators
- Emergency Nursing
- Healthcare Quality Management
Background:
- Nursing quality indicators (NQIs) are crucial for evaluating care quality.
- Validated NQIs specific to emergency nursing are scarce.
- The dynamic nature of emergency care necessitates tailored quality indicators.
Purpose of the Study:
- To identify NQIs in adult emergency nursing.
- To categorize identified NQIs using Donabedian's quality framework (structure, process, outcome).
- To explore the existing validation status of these NQIs.
Main Methods:
- A comprehensive scoping review was performed.
- Searches were conducted in CINAHL and Medline (Ovid) databases.
- Literature published between 2010 and February 2023 was included.
Main Results:
- 18 articles were included from 936 screened.
- A total of 85 NQIs were identified across structure (14), process (45), and outcome (26) domains.
- The validation of the identified NQIs was found to be limited.
Conclusions:
- Identified NQIs can aid in assessing emergency nursing quality, particularly process measures.
- Further research is needed to validate the identified NQIs for adult emergency nursing.
- Future efforts should focus on validating existing and discovering new NQIs for this critical field.
