Ambulation versus oxytocin in protracted labour: a pilot study.

E Hemminki, M Lenck, S Saarikoski

European Journal of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Biology
    |October 1, 1985

    Summary

Ambulating during protracted labor, compared to oxytocin, resulted in more spontaneous vaginal deliveries and positive patient experiences. Further research is needed to determine infant health outcomes for ambulation versus oxytocin treatment.

    Area of Science:

    • Obstetrics and Gynecology
    • Reproductive Health
    • Clinical Trials

    Background:

    • Protracted labor presents challenges in obstetric care.
    • Oxytocin is a common intervention, but may cause intense contractions.
    • Alternative labor management strategies are being explored.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To compare the effectiveness of ambulation versus oxytocin in managing protracted labor.
    • To evaluate patient experiences and labor outcomes in both treatment groups.

    Main Methods:

    • A randomized controlled trial involving 57 patients with protracted labor.
    • Comparison of outcomes between a group ambulating during labor and a group receiving oxytocin.
    • Assessment of delivery methods, labor duration, and patient-reported experiences.

    Related Experiment Videos

    Main Results:

    • Sixty percent of women in the ambulation group delivered without oxytocin.
    • The ambulation group experienced a shorter second stage of labor.
    • Women in the ambulation group reported more positive birth experiences and perceived better contraction quality.

    Conclusions:

    • Ambulation appears to be a viable and patient-preferred option for managing protracted labor.
    • Ambulation may lead to spontaneous vaginal deliveries and improved labor experiences.
    • While infant outcomes require further investigation, patient-reported benefits suggest increased consideration for ambulation in labor management.
