Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder01:30

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder

51
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by persistent inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. It affects approximately 5-8% of children globally, with around 60-70% of cases persisting into adulthood. ADHD has significant implications for educational attainment, social interactions, and occupational success.
Diagnostic Criteria and Symptoms
To diagnose ADHD, symptoms must manifest before age 12 and be evident across multiple settings....

Drug Abuse and Addiction: Pharmacological Phenomena

459
Drug dependence, abuse, and addiction are complex phenomena that can precipitate various abnormal states. Physical dependence refers to a state of pharmacological adaptation to a drug. This adaptation often results in tolerance—a reduced response to the drug after repeated administrations. When the drug use is abruptly stopped, withdrawal symptoms occur due to the body's need to readjust from the pharmacologically induced imbalance. However, tolerance and withdrawal symptoms do not...

Substance Use Disorders Affecting Sleep01:24

Substance Use Disorders Affecting Sleep

163
Substance use disorders involve a pattern of using drugs more extensively than intended and continuing use despite harmful consequences. This includes legal substances like alcohol and nicotine, as well as illegal drugs. These disorders often involve both physical and psychological dependence, reflecting compulsive use of substances that significantly alter thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, contributing to a major public health issue.

Schemas01:42

Schemas

11.6K
A schema is a mental construct consisting of a cluster or collection of related concepts (Bartlett, 1932). There are many different types of schemata, and they all have one thing in common: schemata are a method of organizing information that allows the brain to work more efficiently. When a schema is activated, the brain makes immediate assumptions about the person or object being observed.

Borderline Personality Disorder01:25

Borderline Personality Disorder

38
Borderline Personality Disorder is a complex and multifaceted mental health condition characterized by pervasive instability in interpersonal relationships, self-image, emotions, and impulse control. This instability manifests in extreme emotional reactions, fear of abandonment, and self-destructive behaviors. The disorder significantly impacts daily functioning, often leading to distress in both personal and professional domains.

Personality Disorders: Dependent and Obsessive-Compulsive

38
Dependent personality disorder and obsessive-compulsive personality disorder are two separate psychological conditions that influence behavior, relationships, and overall life functioning. Though both involve maladaptive behaviors, their core characteristics and motivations differ significantly.
 Dependent Personality Disorder
Dependent personality disorder is characterized by an excessive reliance on others to manage various aspects of life. Individuals with this disorder often struggle...

Summary

This study identified three profiles of problematic smartphone use (PSU) based on impulsivity traits. Understanding these profiles, particularly the role of urgency and lack of premeditation, can improve interventions for smartphone addiction.

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Behavioral Science
  • Digital Health

Background:

  • Problematic smartphone use (PSU) is characterized by uncontrollable usage despite negative consequences, often viewed as a behavioral addiction.
  • Impulsivity, a key factor in behavioral addictions, is multidimensional, with specific traits influencing different addictive behaviors.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify distinct profiles of problematic smartphone use (PSU) based on individual impulsivity personality traits.
  • To differentiate between excessive smartphone use and addictive smartphone patterns by examining specific impulsivity traits.

Main Methods:

  • Recruited 412 adults to assess daily smartphone usage, smartphone addiction levels (SAS-SV), and impulsivity profiles (UPPS-P).
  • Employed cluster analysis to categorize participants based on their smartphone usage and impulsivity characteristics.

Main Results:

  • Identified three distinct profiles: non-problematic users, excessive impulsive users with loss of control but low addiction, and highly impulsive users with addictive patterns.
  • Negative urgency, positive urgency, and lack of premeditation were identified as key impulsivity traits driving addictive smartphone use.

Conclusions:

  • Impulsivity personality traits significantly differentiate excessive from addictive smartphone use.
  • Findings provide valuable insights for developing targeted prevention and intervention programs for problematic smartphone use.
