Bone Marrow Sampling and Transplants01:22

Bone Marrow Sampling and Transplants

318
Bone marrow transplant is a potential cure for several diseases, including cancer and specific genetic disorders. Notably, this procedure is applicable for patients suffering from aplastic anemia, certain types of leukemia, severe combined immunodeficiency disease (SCID), Hodgkin's disease, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, multiple myeloma, thalassemia, sickle-cell disease, and certain cancers.
The transplant begins with high doses of chemotherapy and radiation treatment, which aim to destroy...

Stem Cell Therapy for Tissue Regeneration

4.0K
Stem cell therapy is a method used in regenerative medicine to repair and restore function to damaged tissues and organs. Stem cells have the potential to proliferate and differentiate into various tissue types, making them ideal candidates for tissue regeneration. For example, hematopoietic stem cell transplants are commonly used in blood cancer treatment to replenish damaged bone marrow and restore healthy blood cells.

Multipotency of Hematopoietic Stem Cells01:19

Multipotency of Hematopoietic Stem Cells

3.0K
The hematopoietic stem cells or HSCs are multipotent, meaning they can differentiate and give rise to all blood and immune cells. HSCs are maintained in the quiescent stage until an external stimulus initiates their differentiation. The multipotent HSCs exist as two heterogeneous populations, long-term repopulating cells (LTRC) and short-term repopulating cells (STRC). The two HSC populations have different surface markers or receptors and are classified based on quiescence and long-term...

Regulation of Hematopoietic Stem Cells01:01

Regulation of Hematopoietic Stem Cells

3.2K
All blood and immune cells are produced from the multipotent hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) by the process of hematopoiesis. However, they all have a limited life span. In addition, many are depleted in immune surveillance or combatting an injury or infection. This makes blood one of the most regenerative tissues. Hematopoiesis helps replenish these blood and immune cells, restoring the body's normal functioning. However, overproduction of blood and immune cells can make them cancerous or...

Hematopoiesis01:21

Hematopoiesis

5.2K
The process of blood cell formation is called hematopoiesis. Hematopoiesis starts early during development, on the seventh day of embryogenesis. This phase of hematopoiesis is called the primitive wave, wherein the extraembryonic yolk sac allows the production of erythroid cells and endothelial cells from a common precursor called hemangioblast. The erythroid cells provide oxygen to support the growth of the rapidly dividing embryo. Hemangioblasts later develop into hematopoietic stem cells or...

Summary

Second hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT2) offers a treatment option for patients with relapsed hematological diseases after initial HSCT. Donor selection does not impact HSCT2 efficacy, but relapse risk remains significant.

Area of Science:

  • Hematology
  • Oncology
  • Transplantation Medicine

Background:

  • Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is a cornerstone therapy for malignant hematological diseases.
  • Disease relapse after HSCT necessitates exploring alternative treatment strategies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy and influencing factors of a second hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT2) in patients relapsing after HSCT1.
  • To identify key determinants of HSCT2 success and areas for future research.

Main Methods:

  • Review of existing studies analyzing HSCT2 feasibility and outcomes.
  • Identification of prognostic factors associated with HSCT2 efficacy.

Main Results:

  • Factors like the hematopoietic cell transplantation comorbidity index, remission duration post-HSCT1, chronic graft-versus-host disease, and pre-HSCT2 disease status influence HSCT2 outcomes.
  • Donor selection for HSCT2 was found to not significantly affect transplantation efficacy.

Conclusions:

  • HSCT2 is a viable option for select patients with relapsed hematological malignancies.
  • Further research is crucial to improve treatment strategies and outcomes for patients experiencing relapse post-HSCT2, given the poor prognosis associated with secondary relapse.
