The Retina

The retina is a layer of nervous tissue at the back of the eye that transduces light into neural signals. This process, called phototransduction, is carried out by rod and cone photoreceptor cells in the back of the retina.

Background:

  • Babesiosis, a tick-borne illness, has been anecdotally linked to eye complications.
  • Previous research on ophthalmologic effects of babesiosis is limited to case reports and animal studies.
  • The impact of babesiosis on retinal health in human patients remains largely uninvestigated.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the presence of retinal abnormalities in patients diagnosed with acute babesiosis.
  • To determine if retinopathy is a clinical feature of human babesiosis.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional descriptive pilot study was conducted.
  • Ten patients with laboratory-confirmed babesiosis were enrolled from Yale New Haven Hospital.
  • Retinal examinations were performed using indirect ophthalmoscopy following pupil dilation.

Main Results:

  • Retinal examinations of ten babesiosis patients were generally unremarkable.
  • No evidence of retinal inflammation, infection, bleeding, tears, or abnormal vessel formation was observed.
  • The findings suggest babesiosis did not cause detectable retinopathy in this cohort.

Conclusions:

  • This pilot study did not identify retinopathy in patients with babesiosis.
  • Larger cohort studies with longitudinal follow-up are recommended.
  • Further research is necessary to fully understand potential microvascular complications of babesiosis.
