Insights
Patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) reported less treatment burden (TBN) compared to those with other chronic conditions. This study explored TBN in CAD patients, finding lower scores than in non-CAD individuals.
Area of Science:
- Cardiology
- Health Services Research
Background:
- Patient-reported treatment burden (TBN) quantifies the time and effort patients dedicate to managing chronic health conditions.
- Understanding TBN is crucial for optimizing patient care and adherence in chronic disease management.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate and characterize the treatment burden experienced by patients diagnosed with coronary artery disease (CAD).
- To compare TBN levels between patients with CAD and those with other chronic medical conditions.
Main Methods:
- A cohort of 514 patients with chronic medical conditions was enrolled.
- Participants completed validated questionnaires assessing treatment burden (TBN) and health-related quality of life (EQ-5D).
Main Results:
- A total of 116 patients (22.6%) had CAD.
- The mean TBN score for CAD patients was 40.49 ±21.54, significantly lower than the 46.17 ±21.44 observed in non-CAD patients (p=0.023).
Conclusions:
- Patients with coronary artery disease may experience a lower treatment burden compared to individuals with other chronic health issues.
- These findings suggest potential differences in the management demands across various chronic conditions.
Introduction:
Patient-reported treatment burden (TBN) refers to the patient's time and effort invested in the management of their chronic health conditions. The aim of this research was to explore TBN in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD).
Methods:
Consecutive patients with chronic medical condition(s) were invited to complete the study questionnaires (TBN and EQ-5D).
Results:
Of 514 enrolled patients, 116 (22.6%) patients had CAD. The mean TBN score for CAD vs. non-CAD was 40.49 ±21.54 and 46.17 ±21.44 (p = 0.023), respectively.
Conclusions:
Patients with CAD could have a lower TBN in comparison to patients with other chronic medical conditions.

Exercise Stress Test
Exercise stress testing, commonly known as a treadmill test, is a noninvasive procedure used to evaluate cardiovascular function and diagnose heart conditions.
Definition
An exercise stress test measures the heart's response to exertion using a treadmill or stationary bicycle. Chest electrodes record the heart's electrical activity through an ECG, and blood pressure is monitored regularly.
