Behaviorism

2.3K
The field of behaviorism was pioneered by figures such as Ivan Pavlov, John B. Watson, and B.F. Skinner fundamentally shifted the focus of psychology to the observable and controllable aspects of human and animal behavior. This shift marked a critical evolution in the discipline, emphasizing scientific rigor and experimental methodology.
The core premise of behaviorism is its focus on observable behavior rather than internal thoughts or feelings. This approach argues that true scientific...

Naturalistic Observations

15.4K
If you want to understand how behavior occurs, one of the best ways to gain information is to simply observe the behavior in its natural context. However, people might change their behavior in unexpected ways if they know they are being observed. How do researchers obtain accurate information when people tend to hide their natural behavior? As an example, imagine that your professor asks everyone in your class to raise their hand if they always wash their hands after using the restroom. Chances...

Summary

Facility dogs in police interviews did not reduce child reluctance. However, increased child interaction with and comments about the dog correlated with more reluctance, suggesting a complex role for facility dogs in investigative interviews.

Area of Science:

  • Forensic Psychology
  • Child Psychology
  • Animal-Assisted Interventions

Background:

  • Facility dogs are increasingly used in Canadian police investigative interviews.
  • The utility and impact of facility dogs on children's collaboration in these interviews remain largely unexamined.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare investigative interviews with and without a facility dog.
  • To assess the effect of a dog's presence and interaction on children's reluctance during interviews.

Main Methods:

  • Interviews were conducted with children aged 3-15 years.
  • Child reluctance, interactions with the dog, and investigator support were coded.

Main Results:

  • No significant difference in overall child reluctance was found between groups.
  • Children with dogs showed more digressions.
  • Higher child interaction and comments about the dog were associated with increased reluctance, not total interaction duration.

Conclusions:

  • Facility dogs may not universally decrease child reluctance in investigative interviews.
  • Child engagement with the dog, rather than mere presence, appears linked to reluctance indicators.
