Self-Help Support Groups01:28

Self-Help Support Groups

28
Self-help support groups are voluntary, community-based organizations that provide a platform for individuals with shared concerns to exchange support, insights, and practical strategies for coping with life challenges. Typically led by group members or paraprofessionals, these groups form a cornerstone of mental health care, especially in reaching populations that are underserved by traditional healthcare systems.

Cancer Survival Analysis01:21

Cancer Survival Analysis

336
Cancer survival analysis focuses on quantifying and interpreting the time from a key starting point, such as diagnosis or the initiation of treatment, to a specific endpoint, such as remission or death. This analysis provides critical insights into treatment effectiveness and factors that influence patient outcomes, helping to shape clinical decisions and guide prognostic evaluations. A cornerstone of oncology research, survival analysis tackles the challenges of skewed, non-normally...

Treatment Strategies for Psychological Disorders01:24

Treatment Strategies for Psychological Disorders

108
Treatment approaches for psychological disorders fall into three main categories: psychological, biological, and sociocultural. Each approach targets different aspects of mental health, requiring varying levels of education and training.
Psychological therapies focus on modifying emotions, thoughts, and behaviors through talking, interpreting, listening, rewarding, challenging, and modeling. Clinical psychologists, counselors, and social workers commonly practice psychotherapy. Clinical...

Group therapy is a sociocultural approach to psychological treatment, where individuals with shared psychological challenges come together under the guidance of a mental health professional. This therapeutic modality offers unique opportunities for individuals to connect, share, and grow within the context of a supportive group. By fostering mutual understanding and collaboration, group therapy can address a range of psychological concerns effectively, often complementing or surpassing the...

Treatment Resistant Cancers02:56

Treatment Resistant Cancers

3.3K
Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States. A cancer cell is genetically unstable and hence can mutate faster. They can also modify their microenvironment and escape immune surveillance. The difficulties in treating cancer are further compounded by the emergence of rapid resistance to anticancer drugs. The most common ways to attain resistance in cancer cells include alteration in drug transport and metabolism, modification of drug target, elevated DNA damage response, or...

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Neuroscience
  • Rehabilitation Medicine
  • Health Psychology

Background:

  • Prostate cancer survivors (PCS) frequently experience cancer-related cognitive impairment.
  • Existing cognitive rehabilitation programs require adaptation for telehealth delivery and patient-centered design.
  • The Theoretical Domains Framework (TDF) provides a structured approach to behavior change interventions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To adapt and codesign a group cognitive rehabilitation program for PCS with cognitive impairment.
  • To deliver the program via telehealth, incorporating survivor feedback and TDF principles.
  • To develop a manualized intervention for future piloting.

Main Methods:

  • An existing cancer-related cognitive rehabilitation program was adapted for PCS.
  • A codesign focus group workshop with six PCS was conducted to gather feedback.
  • Feedback was analyzed using a template approach, and the intervention was refined and mapped to TDF domains.

Main Results:

  • A four-week online group cognitive rehabilitation program, 'Promoting Cognitive Wellbeing in Prostate Cancer Survivors (ProCog)', was developed.
  • The program includes four 2-hour sessions covering cognitive functions, treatment impacts, emotional regulation, goal-setting, and strategies for fatigue, attention, memory, and executive functioning.
  • Survivor feedback influenced program structure, topics, order, and rehabilitation activities.

Conclusions:

  • The codesign approach and TDF ensure a robust development process for the ProCog intervention, aligning with PCS needs and preferences.
  • The developed ProCog program is an accessible, online intervention tailored for PCS experiencing cognitive difficulties.
  • This research highlights the importance of addressing cognitive impairment in PCS and offers a practical rehabilitation strategy for nursing practice.
