Researchers developed an optical method to detect skyrmions in 2D magnetic materials. This technique uses topological-reflective magnetic circular dichroism (T-RMCD) and works even at high temperatures.
Area of Science:
- Condensed Matter Physics
- Materials Science
- Spintronics
Background:
- Skyrmions in 2D magnetic materials are promising for next-gen spintronic devices.
- Conventional detection methods require electrical conductivity, limiting diverse material applications.
- A need exists for non-conductive, versatile skyrmion characterization techniques.
Purpose of the Study:
- To propose and demonstrate an optical method for detecting skyrmions in 2D magnetic materials.
- To overcome limitations of electrical conductivity-dependent characterization techniques.
- To investigate skyrmion dynamics in graphene/Fe3GeTe2/graphene heterostructures.
Main Methods:
- Fabrication of graphene/Fe3GeTe2/graphene vertical van der Waals heterostructures.
- Generation of stabilized skyrmions using out-of-plane current.
- Utilizing magneto-optical Kerr (MOKE) technique and magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) measurements.
Main Results:
- Observation of topological-reflective magnetic circular dichroism (T-RMCD) effects in Fe3GeTe2.
- Attribution of T-RMCD peak component to skyrmion magnetic domain annihilation.
- T-RMCD signal stability up to the Curie temperature (~200 K) of Fe3GeTe2.
Conclusions:
- The study presents a universal, contactless, and nondestructive optical approach for skyrmion detection in 2D vdW magnetic materials.
- This method overcomes limitations of electrical detection, enabling broader material exploration.
- The findings offer a new degree of freedom for modulating and studying skyrmions.

Magnetic Field due to Moving Charges
Consider a point charge moving with a constant velocity. Like the electric field, the magnetic field at any point is directly proportional to the magnitude of the charge and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between the source point and the field point. However, unlike the electric field, the magnetic field is always perpendicular to the plane containing the line...
