Summary

High stromal CD73 (sCD73) expression indicates a poor prognosis in invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC), especially in luminal breast cancer. Further studies are needed to confirm sCD73 as an independent prognostic factor.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Cancer Biology
  • Immunohistochemistry

Background:

  • Invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC) exhibits diverse subtypes with varying prognoses.
  • Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) generally has poorer outcomes.
  • Stromal CD73 (sCD73) has been implicated in tumor invasion and prognosis in other cancers.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the expression of stromal CD73 (sCD73) in IDC.
  • To determine the prognostic significance of sCD73 in IDC, including TNBC and luminal subtypes.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of 61 surgically treated, HER2-negative IDC cases (2005-2010).
  • Exclusion of cases receiving preoperative therapy.
  • Evaluation of sCD73 expression via tumor stroma immunostaining.

Main Results:

  • sCD73 expression detected in 70% of IDC cases.
  • Significantly higher sCD73 rates in TNBC (93%) versus luminal breast cancer (48%).
  • High sCD73 associated with poor overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) in all cases and in luminal breast cancer.

Conclusions:

  • Elevated sCD73 expression correlates with poor prognosis in IDC, particularly in luminal breast cancer.
  • Further research is warranted to establish sCD73 as an independent prognostic biomarker.
