Acupuncture may help prevent recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs) in women. This study found significantly fewer UTIs in women receiving acupuncture alongside cranberry treatment over 12 months.
Area of Science:
- Integrative Medicine
- Urology
- Preventive Healthcare
Background:
- Recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs) present a significant clinical challenge.
- Prophylaxis strategies for recurrent UTIs are continuously being explored.
- Acupuncture is investigated as a potential non-antibiotic preventive measure.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the efficacy of acupuncture in preventing recurrent UTIs in women.
- To compare acupuncture plus cranberry versus cranberry alone for UTI prophylaxis.
Main Methods:
- A multicenter randomized controlled trial involving women with recurrent uncomplicated UTIs.
- Participants were randomized to receive either acupuncture therapy or a control (no acupuncture).
- Acupuncture involved 12 sessions over 18 weeks; all participants received cranberry products.
Main Results:
- While not significant at 6 months, acupuncture combined with cranberry showed a higher proportion of UTI-free women at 12 months (66% vs. 45%).
- The number of UTIs decreased significantly in the acupuncture group by the 12-month follow-up.
- Acupuncture therapy resulted in a significantly lower median number of UTIs at 12 months (p=0.01).
Conclusions:
- Segmental acupuncture shows promise as an effective treatment for recurrent UTIs in women.
- Acupuncture may offer a viable alternative to long-term antibiotic use for UTI prevention.
- Further research is warranted to confirm these findings and explore long-term effects.
