Hydrostatic splint therapy, using the Aqualizer Ultra, significantly altered occlusal force distribution in temporomandibular disorder (TMD) patients. This therapy is recommended for full-mouth rehabilitation in all patients.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare occlusal force distribution using T-Scan III before and after hydrostatic splint therapy.
  • To evaluate the impact of the Aqualizer Ultra on subjects with and without TMDs.

Main Methods:

  • Fifty-one subjects (19 non-TMD, 32 TMD) underwent occlusal analysis with T-Scan III.
  • Analysis was performed before and after the use of a hydrostatic temporary oral splint (Aqualizer Ultra).
  • Subjects were categorized using anamnesis and the Fonseca questionnaire.

Main Results:

  • Significant changes in anterior and posterior right occlusal force percentages were observed in the TMD group post-therapy.
  • The non-TMD group showed no significant force distribution differences.
  • Overall, occlusal force increased in the anterior region (32-56%) and decreased posteriorly after splint usage.

Conclusions:

  • Hydrostatic splint therapy effectively modifies occlusal force distribution.
  • The Aqualizer Ultra is recommended for full-mouth rehabilitation in patients with or without TMDs.
