Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the retention of basic sciences knowledge among GP registrars.
  • To explore GP registrars' perceptions of the utility and relevance of basic sciences in clinical practice.
  • To identify factors influencing knowledge retention and suggest strategies for improvement.

Main Methods:

  • A sequential explanatory mixed methods design was employed.
  • Knowledge retention was measured using a multiple-choice question (MCQ) examination.
  • Perceptions were explored through qualitative interviews, analyzed thematically, alongside statistical analysis of MCQ data.

Main Results:

  • Sixty-one GP registrars participated in the MCQ exam; 11 were interviewed.
  • Biochemistry showed the highest mean score (75.1%), while anatomy had the lowest (56.07%).
  • Formative clinical examination scores and gender predicted performance. Five themes emerged regarding knowledge utility, integration, and retention challenges.

Conclusions:

  • Basic sciences are perceived as relevant to clinical practice by GP registrars.
  • Continuing professional development (CPD) sessions and accessible online resources are proposed to enhance knowledge retention.
  • Future research should explore innovative educational strategies tailored for GPs.
