Summary

Thyroid function impacts cardiovascular health even in euthyroidism. Higher thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels within the euthyroid range correlated with increased arterial stiffness (AS) and impaired left ventricular (LV) diastolic function.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate arterial stiffness (AS) and left ventricular (LV) diastolic dysfunction in euthyroid individuals.
  • To explore the association between thyroid function and cardiovascular parameters in euthyroidism.

Main Methods:

  • 249 euthyroid participants were divided into two groups based on TSH levels.
  • Arterial stiffness assessed using brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV).
  • LV diastolic function evaluated via Color-Doppler-Echocardiography.

Main Results:

  • Group B (higher TSH) showed significantly higher baPWV and impaired LV diastolic function (lower E/A ratio) compared to Group A.
  • Free triiodothyronine (FT3) levels and systolic blood pressure differed significantly between groups.
  • FT3 was associated with higher baPWV; E/A ratio correlated with TSH, FT3, and baPWV.

Conclusions:

  • An association exists between thyroid function and AS/LV diastolic function in euthyroid subjects.
  • Elevated TSH levels within the euthyroid range may indicate early cardiovascular changes.
  • Further research is required to validate these findings.
