Summary

This review examines adults who perpetrate image-based sexual abuse (IBSA), finding perpetrators are often men, younger adults, and LGBTIQ+ individuals motivated by social rewards or retaliation. Prevention strategies should address societal norms and individual resilience.

Background:

Image-based sexual abuse (IBSA) is a growing concern, yet perpetration remains under-researched.
Existing research primarily focuses on IBSA impacts and scope, not the perpetrators themselves.

Purpose of the Study:

To consolidate and synthesize current knowledge on the perpetration of IBSA against adults.
To identify characteristics, motivations, and associated factors of IBSA perpetrators.

Main Methods:

A scoping review of scholarly and gray literature from 2013-2023.
Inclusion of 26 studies reporting on adults (16+) admitting IBSA perpetration behaviors.

Main Results:

Prevalence of IBSA subtypes varied significantly.
Perpetrators are more likely men, younger adults, and LGBTIQ+ individuals.
Motivations include social rewards, power, sexual gratification, and retaliation; Dark Tetrad traits are associated. Overlap exists between victimization and perpetration, and with intimate partner violence.

Conclusions:

Prevention efforts must target opportunities for offending and societal norms.
Early interventions should focus on resilience, self-esteem, and healthy relationships.
