Summary

Reducing post-liver biopsy observation to 2 hours appears safe, as most complications, including serious hemorrhages, occur within this timeframe. This could streamline patient recovery after percutaneous liver biopsy.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the safety of shortening the post-percutaneous liver biopsy observation period.
  • To determine the optimal duration for monitoring complications after liver biopsy.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 1125 patients undergoing percutaneous liver biopsy (2017-2022).
  • Data collected included demographics, procedure details, and complications graded by CIRSE classification.
  • Conditional survival probabilities were calculated to assess complication timing.

Main Results:

  • 275 complications occurred, mostly minor (255 grade 1).
  • 17 post-procedural hemorrhages (6%) were recorded, with 4 grade 3 events requiring intervention.
  • 89% of all complications and 94% of hemorrhages occurred within 2 hours post-biopsy.
