Summary

Repeat microvascular decompression surgery (rMVD) is effective for recurrent trigeminal neuralgia (TN) after initial surgery. This study found rMVD provided significant pain relief in most patients, with low morbidity, making it a primary treatment option.

  • Follow-up data on pain relief and complications were analyzed.
  • Main Results:

    • Out of 375 MVD procedures, 19 patients (5.06%) required rMVD due to symptom recurrence.
    • Recurrence causes included new vessel compression (47.4%) or Teflon granuloma (42.1%).
    • Excellent or good pain relief (BNI-I or BNI-III) was achieved in 94.7% of patients post-rMVD.

    Conclusions:

    • Recurrent trigeminal neuralgia after initial MVD is possible.
    • Repeat microvascular decompression surgery is a viable and effective treatment for recurrent TN.
    • rMVD offers significant pain control with low morbidity, supporting its role as a primary treatment option.
