Substance use disorders involve a pattern of using drugs more extensively than intended and continuing use despite harmful consequences. This includes legal substances like alcohol and nicotine, as well as illegal drugs. These disorders often involve both physical and psychological dependence, reflecting compulsive use of substances that significantly alter thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, contributing to a major public health issue.

Area of Science:

  • Agricultural Health and Safety
  • Occupational Substance Use
  • Mental Health in Farming Communities

Background:

  • Agricultural workers face unique occupational hazards and stressors.
  • Limited research exists on substance use patterns within the farming population.
  • This study addresses the knowledge gap concerning substance use among Illinois farmers.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To characterize the prevalence and patterns of substance use among farmers in Illinois.
  • To explore associations between substance use and farming-related factors, mental health, and demographics.

Main Methods:

  • A mail survey was administered to Illinois farmers.
  • The Brief Alcohol, Smoking and Substance Involvement Screening Test (Brief ASSIST) assessed substance use.
  • Data on farming characteristics, mental health, stress, coping, social support, and demographics were collected and analyzed using chi-square and non-parametric tests.

Main Results:

  • Alcohol, tobacco, cannabis, and sedatives were the most commonly reported substances for lifetime and recent use.
  • Approximately 75% of participants reported recent alcohol use.
  • Recent tobacco use correlated with being unmarried, lower education, and less concern about climate stress. Recent sedative use linked to greater concern about isolation stress. Multiple substance use was associated with increased suicide risk and generalized anxiety disorder criteria.
  • No recent use of cocaine, heroin, inhalants, or hallucinogens was reported.

Conclusions:

  • Social and cultural factors inherent to farming may influence substance use in agricultural communities.
  • Further research is needed to understand the interplay between farming, community, and substance use.
  • Recommendations for targeted programs and resources to support adaptive coping strategies are warranted.
