    Summary

    Oral acyclovir and acyclovir ophthalmic ointment show comparable efficacy in treating herpetic dendritic corneal ulcers. Both treatments resulted in rapid healing with no significant side effects, demonstrating effective antiviral activity.

    Background:

    • Herpetic dendritic corneal ulceration is a common ocular infection caused by the herpes simplex virus.
    • Antiviral therapies are crucial for managing ocular herpes infections to prevent vision-threatening complications.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To compare the efficacy and safety of oral acyclovir versus topical acyclovir ophthalmic ointment for treating herpetic dendritic corneal ulceration.
    • To evaluate the healing time and side effects associated with each treatment modality.

    Main Methods:

    • A double-blind, randomized comparative study involving 29 patients with herpetic dendritic corneal ulceration.
    • Patients were allocated to receive either oral acyclovir or acyclovir ophthalmic ointment.
    • Tear fluid acyclovir levels were measured in patients receiving oral acyclovir.

    Main Results:

    • Complete healing was observed in all 14 patients treated with acyclovir ointment.
