Chemical Synapses01:26

Chemical Synapses

8.8K
Chemical synapses are specialized sites between two neurons or between a neuron and a non-neuronal cell like a muscle, glandular or sensory cell.
Because chemical synapses depend on the release of neurotransmitter molecules from synaptic vesicles to pass on their signal, there is an approximately one millisecond delay between when the axon potential reaches the presynaptic terminal and when the neurotransmitter leads to opening of postsynaptic ion channels. Additionally, this signaling is...

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Immunology
  • Cell Biology

Background:

  • The brain's immune and nervous systems interact via neurons, glial cells, and infiltrating immune cells.
  • Neuroimmunological (NI) synapses represent a unique form of physical cell-cell interaction.
  • Immune signaling pathways are crucial for brain development, plasticity, and function.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To explore the communication between immune components and synaptic elements in ischemic stroke.
  • To identify potential communication hubs in neuroinflammation during stroke pathology.

Main Methods:

  • This review synthesizes existing research on neuroimmune interactions.
  • It proposes communication pathways based on current understanding of immune and synaptic signaling.

Main Results:

  • Immune signaling pathways regulating inflammation also influence brain development and plasticity.
  • The dynamic nature of synaptic connections makes the immune system well-suited for regulatory roles.
  • Many molecular players in neuroimmune interactions, particularly in pathological states like stroke, remain to be identified.

Conclusions:

  • Understanding neuroimmune communication is vital for addressing ischemic stroke.
  • Further research is needed to uncover cellular and molecular players in pathological neuroinflammation.
