Background:

  • The Single Simple Question (SSQ) is a validated tool for assessing myasthenia gravis and neuropathies.
  • Axonal polyneuropathies (PNPs), such as diabetic neuropathy, require effective assessment tools.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To explore the utility of the SSQ in evaluating patients with axonal PNPs.
  • To assess the responsiveness of the SSQ to changes in disease scale.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective chart review of 150 patients with axonal PNP.
  • Utilized clinical and electrophysiological evaluations alongside established disability scales (MRC sum score, mTCNS, ONSLS, RODS).

Main Results:

  • The SSQ demonstrated moderate correlation with the RODS (r=0.59) and mTCNS symptom score (r=-0.43).
  • Changes in the mTCNS symptom score showed statistical significance longitudinally.
  • SSQ scores were lower in patients experiencing pain and showed no association with electrophysiological parameters.

Conclusions:

  • The SSQ is a feasible and valid scale for assessing and monitoring length-dependent axonal PNPs.
  • The SSQ's limited association with other scales suggests the need for complementary assessments in PNP evaluation.
