Background:

Hospitalized patients with chronic heart failure (CHF) rely heavily on family caregivers.
The role of technology, specifically smartphones, in supporting caregivers during hospitalization is increasingly important.
Understanding caregiver burden and smartphone use is crucial for optimizing patient care.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate smartphone utilization by family caregivers of hospitalized chronic heart failure (CHF) patients.
To explore the relationship between caregiver financial burden, mental health, and smartphone use in patient care.
To determine how caregiver economic status influences the perceived importance of smartphone communication for CHF patient management.

Main Methods:

120 patients with CHF and their unpaid family caregivers participated.

Caregivers were grouped by perceived smartphone importance.

Data collected included demographics, mobile phone use, patient functional status (Barthel Index), clinical scores (MEWS, JH-FRAT), family burden, and cardiac function (LVEF, SV).

Main Results:

Patient age correlated with functional status and clinical risk scores.
Cardiac function (LVEF, SV) correlated with clinical risk scores (MEWS).
Caregivers perceiving smartphones as important reported higher financial burdens; financial burden and mental health significantly impacted call content regarding treatment. Caregiver economic status dictated smartphone importance in CHF care.

Conclusions:

Financial burden and mental health are key factors influencing how family caregivers use smartphones for treatment-related communication.
The economic status of family caregivers is a significant determinant of the perceived value of smartphone use in managing hospitalized CHF patients.
Future interventions should consider the socioeconomic context of caregivers to enhance technology-assisted care for CHF patients.
