Key Elements for Plant Nutrition02:35

Key Elements for Plant Nutrition

18.7K
Like all living organisms, plants require organic and inorganic nutrients to survive, reproduce, grow and maintain homeostasis. To identify nutrients that are essential for plant functioning, researchers have leveraged a technique called hydroponics. In hydroponic culture systems, plants are grown—without soil—in water-based solutions containing nutrients. At least 17 nutrients have been identified as essential elements required by plants. Plants acquire these elements from the...

Tonicity in Plants00:53

Tonicity in Plants

53.3K
Tonicity describes the capacity of a cell to lose or gain water. It depends on the quantity of solute that does not penetrate the membrane. Tonicity delimits the magnitude and direction of osmosis and results in three possible scenarios that alter the volume of a cell: hypertonicity, hypotonicity, and isotonicity. Due to differences in structure and physiology, tonicity of plant cells is different from that of animal cells in some scenarios.

Area of Science:

  • Food Science
  • Analytical Chemistry
  • Nutritional Science

Background:

  • Increasing consumption of plant-based milk substitutes necessitates understanding their nutritional composition.
  • Additives in these products can introduce non-protein nitrogen, complicating accurate nutritional assessment.
  • Accurate nitrogen content is critical for individuals managing kidney disease.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and validate a rapid, reproducible method for determining total nitrogen in plant-based milk alternatives.
  • To compare the measured total nitrogen content with the protein content declared on product labels.
  • To investigate the influence of additives and brand variations on the nitrogen profiles of milk substitutes.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized microchip gel electrophoresis for simultaneous qualitative and quantitative determination of total nitrogen.
  • Analyzed popular milk alternatives and milk substitutes derived from specific plants.
  • Performed statistical evaluations to assess differences between products and brands.

Main Results:

  • Total nitrogen content frequently differed from the protein content stated on packaging.
  • Distinct microfluidic profiles were observed between different brands of the same plant-derived milk substitute, suggesting additive variability.
  • Additive-free products exhibited different microfluidic profiles compared to fortified versions of the same base ingredient.

Conclusions:

  • The microchip gel electrophoresis method provides a reliable way to assess total nitrogen in plant-based milk alternatives.
  • Variations in total nitrogen content highlight the impact of additives and manufacturing processes.
  • Accurate total nitrogen data is vital for dietary management, particularly for patients with kidney disease requiring controlled nitrogen intake.
