Subnormality revisited in early 19th century France

The generally accepted view that there was neglect of the study of mental handicap before the early 19th century is disputed. It is shown that interest in defect appears to have been evinced several centuries before. The later resurgence of interest is traced to demographic, socio-economic and philosophical changes, and therapeutic advance.
