Purpose of the Study:

  • To categorize social relationship variables using theoretical frameworks.
  • To identify which dimensions of social factors are robustly associated with new-onset diabetes in older adults.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized longitudinal data from the National Social Life, Health, and Aging Project (n=2,365) and the Health and Retirement Study (n=11,824).
  • Analyzed data from individuals aged 57-90 over 4-5 years using logistic regression models.
  • Examined associations between 15 identically measured social variables and physician-diagnosed incident diabetes.

Main Results:

  • Not being married, spousal relationship strain, and loneliness were linked to a higher risk of developing diabetes.

  • Reducing negative social aspects appears more impactful for diabetes risk reduction than enhancing positive social connections.
