Chest Physiotherapy01:24

Chest Physiotherapy

412
Chest Physiotherapy (CPT) is a therapeutic technique used in respiratory care to improve ventilation, clear bronchial secretions, and enhance the efficiency of respiratory muscles. This therapy includes three primary procedures: postural drainage, percussion, and vibration. It can be performed on spontaneously breathing patients and those who are intubated and mechanically ventilated.
Purpose
CPT is primarily used for patients with excessive bronchial secretions who have difficulty clearing...

Summary

School physiotherapy interventions show promise for improving student participation. While some methods like treadmill training and upper limb exercises have strong evidence, more research is needed to guide practice in school settings.

Area of Science:

  • Pediatrics
  • Rehabilitation Medicine
  • Educational Psychology

Background:

  • Student participation in school is crucial for academic and social development.
  • Physiotherapy interventions delivered in school settings aim to address physical barriers to participation.
  • Evidence for the effectiveness of these interventions requires systematic evaluation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To systematically review and evaluate the effectiveness of school-based physiotherapy interventions.
  • To identify specific interventions that improve student participation in school settings.

Main Methods:

  • A systematic review adhering to PRISMA guidelines was conducted.
  • Four major databases were searched for relevant studies on pediatric physiotherapy in schools.
  • Studies were categorized by intervention type and assessed for evidence level and methodological quality.

Main Results:

  • Twenty-three studies encompassing fifteen intervention types met the inclusion criteria.
  • Strong positive evidence supported treadmill training without bodyweight support and upper limb interventions.
  • Moderate to weak positive evidence supported various other interventions including robotic-assisted gait training, Gross Motor Activity Training with Multimodal Education-Based Therapy (GMAT+MET), and environmental modifications.

Conclusions:

  • Preliminary evidence suggests various school-based physiotherapy interventions can be effective.
  • Current evidence specifically for school contexts is insufficient to definitively guide practice.
  • Further research is recommended to specifically evaluate physiotherapy approaches within school environments.
