Background:

Orthopaedic theatre lists are crucial for safe and efficient surgical operations.
Current lists lack standardized components, leading to potential errors and inefficiencies.
There is a need for established guidelines for elective Orthopaedic theatre lists.

Purpose of the Study:

To formulate guidelines for elective Orthopaedic theatre lists.
To improve the efficiency and reduce errors in Orthopaedic theatre scheduling.
To establish a gold standard for Orthopaedic theatre list content.

Main Methods:

Analysis of 326 elective Orthopaedic theatre lists (Oct-Nov 2018).
Evaluation of demographics, surgical details, anaesthesia, and extra information.
Survey of theatre staff to identify requirements.
Creation of a proforma and re-audit of 255 lists (Nov-Dec 2019).

Main Results:

100% documentation of orthopaedic consultant in charge (vs. 85%).
Improved anaesthesia documentation (14.5% spinal vs. 0.3%).
Increased mention of prosthesis/equipment (34% vs. 23%) and fluoroscopy (25% vs. 11%).

Conclusions:

Standardized guidelines are essential for safe and efficient Orthopaedic theatre lists.
The audited parameters should be incorporated into these standards.
The 'William Harvey theatre list standard' is proposed as a gold standard.
