Plant Breeding and Biotechnology01:59

Plant Breeding and Biotechnology

18.9K
Crop cultivation has a long history in human civilization, with records showing the cultivation of cereal plants beginning at around 8000 BC. This early plant breeding was developed primarily to provide a steady supply of food.

Production Efficiency01:01

Production Efficiency

16.8K
Net production efficiency (NPE) is the efficiency at which organisms assimilate energy into biomass for the next trophic level. Due to low metabolic rates and less energy spent on thermoregulatory processes, the NPE of ectotherms (cold-blooded animals) is 10 times higher than endotherms (warm-blooded animals).

Migration00:53

Migration

7.9K
Migration is long-range, seasonal movement from one region or habitat to another. This common strategy, carried out by many different organisms around the world, is an adaptive response that typically corresponds to changes in an organism’s environment, like resource availability or climate. Migrations can involve huge groups of thousands of animals as well as single individuals traveling alone and can range from thousands of kilometers to just a few hundred meters.

Conservation of Small Populations02:04

Conservation of Small Populations

13.1K
Small population sizes put a species at extreme risk of extinction due to a lack of variation, and a consequent decrease in adaptability. This weakens the chances of survival under pressures such as climate change, competition from other species, or new diseases. Large populations are more likely to survive pressures such as these, as such populations are more likely to harbor individuals that have genetic variants that are adaptive under new stresses. Small populations are much less...

Area of Science:

  • Agricultural Science
  • Animal Science
  • Livestock Production

Background:

  • Mixed crop-livestock farming is prevalent in eastern Tigray, Ethiopia.
  • Irob cattle are integral to the local agricultural system, providing draught power and milk.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the livestock production system and performance of Irob cattle.
  • To identify key constraints affecting cattle production in the region.

Main Methods:

  • An exploratory survey was conducted in six tabias (administrative units) using purposive and random sampling.
  • Data on herd size, reproductive and production performance, and constraints were collected.

Main Results:

  • Cattle are primarily valued for draught power (0.43), milk (0.32), and income (0.15).
  • Key performance indicators included: age at first calving (37.4±5.5 months), calving interval (15.5±4.1 months), and daily milk yield (1.7±0.4 L).
  • Major constraints identified were feed availability, diseases/parasites, artificial insemination (AI) access, water scarcity, and veterinary services.

Conclusions:

  • The production environment significantly influences the success of cattle breed improvement programs.
  • Tailored management systems are recommended to address identified constraints and enhance Irob cattle productivity.
