Coping Strategies: Problem Focused01:27

Coping Strategies: Problem Focused

55
Coping strategies are methods people use to manage, tolerate, or reduce the effects of stressors. These strategies involve both behavioral and psychological actions to handle stressful situations. One common approach is problem-focused coping, which aims to change or eliminate the source of stress rather than merely addressing its consequences. This method involves taking direct action to resolve the issue causing stress.
For example, consider a student who struggles to understand their...

Coping Strategies: Emotion Focused

64
Emotion-focused coping refers to a set of strategies aimed at managing the emotional impact of stressors, rather than directly addressing their causes. This approach involves altering one's emotional response to stressful situations to reduce their psychological effects. For example, individuals might talk with a friend or engage in activities like journaling to express their feelings. Such actions can help achieve emotional clarity or release, providing the psychological stability needed...

Stereotypes, Prejudice, and Discrimination

90.1K
Humans are very diverse and although we share many similarities, we also have many differences. The social groups we belong to help form our identities (Tajfel, 1974). These differences may be difficult for some people to reconcile, which may lead to prejudice toward people who are different. Prejudice is a negative attitude and feeling toward an individual based solely on one’s membership in a particular social group (Allport, 1954; Brown, 2010). Prejudice is common against people who...

Stereotype Content Model

14.0K
The Stereotype Content Model (SCM) was first proposed by Susan Fiske and her colleagues (Fiske, Cuddy, Glick & Xu, 2002; see also Fiske, 2012 and Fiske, 2017). The SCM specifies that when someone encounters a new group, they will stereotype them based on two metrics: warmth—or that group’s perceived intent, and how likely they are to provide help or inflict harm—and competence—or their ability to carry out that objective. Depending on the warmth-competence...

Self-Discrepancy Theory

18.3K
One influential perspective on what motivates people's behavior is detailed in Tory Higgin's self-discrepancy theory (Higgins, 1987). He proposed that people hold disagreeing internal representations of themselves that lead to different emotional states.

Self-Presentation: Self-Monitoring and Self-Handicapping

38.9K
People can go to great lengths to protect their self-image and present themselves in ways that they want others to see them. Sociologist Erving Goffman presented the idea that a person is like an actor on a stage. Calling his theory dramaturgy, Goffman believed that we use “impression management” to present ourselves to others as we hope to be perceived. Each situation is a new scene, and individuals perform different roles depending on who is present (Goffman, 1959). Think about...

Summary

Weight discrimination is linked to using disengaged coping strategies, which contribute to poorer physical, mental, and social health. This association exists regardless of body mass index (BMI).

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Public Health
  • Health Disparities

Background:

  • Perceived weight discrimination is consistently linked to adverse health outcomes.
  • Coping strategies may mediate the relationship between weight discrimination and health.
  • Understanding these mechanisms is crucial for public health interventions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between perceived weight discrimination and general coping strategies.
  • To determine if coping strategies mediate the link between weight discrimination and health markers.
  • To explore the role of body mass index (BMI) in these associations.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional survey was administered to 1882 participants.
  • Participants reported on perceived weight discrimination, general coping strategies, and health markers.
  • Statistical analyses examined associations and mediation effects, controlling for BMI.

Main Results:

  • Perceived weight discrimination correlated with increased use of disengaged coping strategies.
  • Disengaged coping mediated the association between weight discrimination and worse physical, mental, and social health (14-47% mediation).
  • Individuals with obesity (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m² ) used fewer active and support coping strategies.

Conclusions:

  • Perceived weight discrimination is associated with disengaged coping mechanisms for stress.
  • Disengaged coping strategies represent a key pathway linking weight discrimination to negative health outcomes.
  • Interventions addressing weight discrimination may improve health by promoting adaptive coping strategies.
