Palliative care is developed for advanced stage patients suffering from chronic, progressive diseases, and its aim is to improve the quality of life. Its task is to treat the complex symptom burdens, avoid the overtreatment and create advanced care planning. The palliative care is essential not only for cancer patients but also for patients with severe organ failure or dementia. Its application into the everyday treatment in departments of internal medicine treating elderly patients in serious condition and with significant comorbidity is very important as well. In our work, we give a brief summary of palliative care consult service integrated in palliative patient care in Pécs. Then we present the development of the palliative care system in our department of internal medicine. For development of the system, institute management open to creation of this care, education of nurses and doctors, creation of up-to-date access to special medicines and development of the process of the patients visits are important. The aim of our article is to help the development of palliative care system for the patients with serious condition is inpatient care. In addition to improving the patients’ quality of life, this form of care also reduces the treatment’s cost. Orv Hetil. 2024; 165(31): 1186–1190.
