Background:

  • Primary progressive aphasia (PPA) comprises distinct variants with varying cognitive profiles.
  • While neuropsychological tests show memory deficits in logopenic PPA (lv-PPA), non-fluent PPA (nfv-PPA), and semantic PPA (sv-PPA), real-world memory experiences are less understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate and compare the day-to-day memory experiences across different variants of PPA.
  • To identify specific memory difficulties characteristic of each PPA variant.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized the Cambridge Behavioural Inventory-Revised (CBI-R) carer questionnaire to assess memory in 26 lv-PPA, 24 nfv-PPA, 40 sv-PPA patients, and 70 controls.
  • Employed Kruskal-Wallis tests for group comparisons and receiver operating characteristic curves to identify discriminative items.

Main Results:

  • lv-PPA and sv-PPA patients reported more memory issues, repetition, forgetting names/objects, and concentration problems than controls.
  • lv-PPA patients also showed increased instances of misplacing items and forgetting the day.
  • All PPA groups experienced greater confusion in unfamiliar environments; lv-PPA and sv-PPA had more name/object forgetting than nfv-PPA, while sv-PPA showed greater overall memory impairment and concentration issues compared to nfv-PPA.

Conclusions:

  • Distinct profiles of day-to-day memory difficulties exist among PPA variants.
  • Further research is needed to understand how language impairments influence these memory profiles.
