    Area of Science:

    • Radiology
    • Oncology
    • Pathology

    Context:

    • Macroscopically evident breast cysts are common findings.
    • Accurate diagnosis is crucial for patient management and to rule out malignancy.

    Purpose:

    • To evaluate the diagnostic yield of various methods for breast cysts.
    • To assess the role of ultrasound in breast cyst diagnosis.

    Summary:

    • 1405 breast cysts were analyzed using cytology and pneumocystography.
    • Cytology results were negative in 79.9%, suspect in 1.9%, and positive in 0.4%. Inadequate aspirates were noted in 18%.
    • Three intracystic cancers were diagnosed; ultrasound reduced the need for pneumocystography and aspiration cytology.

    Impact:

    • Ultrasound integration has streamlined breast cyst diagnostic pathways.
    • Improved diagnostic accuracy and reduced invasive procedures for benign breast cysts.
