    Summary

Serial stereotactic biopsies accurately diagnosed cryptic vascular malformations (CVM) in functional brain areas. This minimally invasive method offered histological confirmation with low risk, aiding in identifying CVM characteristics.

    Area of Science:

    • Neurology
    • Neurosurgery
    • Pathology

    Background:

    • Cryptic vascular malformations (CVM) are challenging to diagnose, especially when located in critical brain regions.
    • Previous diagnostic methods for CVM were often invasive or lacked definitive histological confirmation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy and safety of serial stereotactic biopsies for diagnosing deeply situated or functionally critical cryptic vascular malformations.
    • To identify retrospective diagnostic characteristics of CVM that may present without overt hemorrhage.

    Main Methods:

    • Diagnosis of 14 cryptic vascular malformations (CVM) using serial stereotactic biopsies.
    • Histological examination of biopsy samples for definitive diagnosis.
    • Retrospective analysis of CVM characteristics, including the presence or absence of hematoma.

    Related Experiment Videos

    Main Results:

    • Serial stereotactic biopsies successfully provided histological diagnoses for all 14 CVM cases.
    • Hematoma was evacuated during biopsy in 4 patients, though initial history was not suggestive of hemorrhage.
    • Retrospective analysis revealed specific characteristics in CVM cases without hematoma that warrant diagnostic suspicion.

    Conclusions:

    • Serial stereotactic biopsy is a safe and effective method for diagnosing cryptic vascular malformations in challenging locations.
    • Histological diagnosis via stereotactic biopsy is crucial for CVM management.
    • Identifying subtle CVM characteristics can improve early diagnosis, even in the absence of significant hemorrhage.
