A rare neck cyst, a simple colloid cyst in a parasitic thyroid nodule, was diagnosed in a 32-year-old man. This case highlights unusual neck pathology and diagnostic challenges for pathologists.
Area of Science:
- Pathology
- Endocrinology
- Surgical Oncology
Background:
- Neck swellings present diverse pathologies, often causing diagnostic challenges.
- Thyroid-related conditions typically manifest as midline neck masses.
Observation:
- A 32-year-old male presented with a slow-growing right neck nodule.
- The nodule was surgically resected and pathologically examined.
- Imaging revealed a cystic lesion separate from the main thyroid gland.
Findings:
- Histopathological analysis confirmed a simple colloid cyst within a parasitic thyroid nodule.
- Simple colloid cysts result from impaired thyroglobulin accumulation in inactive thyroid follicles.
- The parasitic thyroid nodule's ectopic location was a unique feature.
Implications:
- This case expands the understanding of ectopic thyroid tissue pathologies.
- It underscores the importance of considering rare presentations in neck mass diagnosis.
- Accurate pathological diagnosis is crucial for appropriate patient management.
