Summary

Mental health diagnoses are a leading cause of medical evacuations in the U.S. Central Command (USCENTCOM) area of responsibility (AOR). This study establishes a baseline evacuation rate to assess future interventions for reducing mental health evacuations.

Background:

Mental health diagnoses are a primary driver of medical evacuations in the USCENTCOM AOR.
Establishing a baseline evacuation rate is crucial for evaluating the efficacy of medical interventions.
Data from 2022 indicates a significant need to address mental health in deployed populations.

Purpose of the Study:

To establish a baseline mental health evacuation rate within the USCENTCOM AOR.
To provide a benchmark for assessing the impact of future mental health initiatives.
To analyze trends in medical evacuations related to mental health diagnoses.

Main Methods:

Utilized individual evacuation data from January 1, 2017, to December 31, 2021.
Data sourced from the U.S. Transportation Command's Regulating and Command & Control Evacuation System.
Calculated and analyzed monthly and annual evacuation rates.

Main Results:

The mean monthly evacuation rate was 0.44 per 1,000 individuals (95% CI, 0.41-0.47).
No statistically significant monthly variations in evacuation rates were observed (P = .505).
A statistically significant difference in mean evacuation rates was found across calendar years (P = .003), with the highest rate in 2021.

Conclusions:

A benchmark mental health evacuation rate has been established for the USCENTCOM AOR.
This baseline rate is essential for measuring the effectiveness of mental health evacuation reduction strategies.
Findings highlight the need for ongoing monitoring and intervention assessment.
