Personality Theory by Eysenck and Eysenck

421
Hans and Sybil Eysenck developed a widely recognized theory of personality, which emphasizes the role of temperament and genetically based differences in shaping individual traits. Their theory posits that biological factors primarily determine personality and can be understood through two main dimensions: extroversion/introversion and neuroticism/stability.
In the extroversion/introversion dimension, highly extroverted people are sociable, outgoing, and easily connect with others. In contrast,...

Self-Report Tests of Personality

328
Self-report inventories are objective personality assessments that use multiple-choice items or numbered scales, typically ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). They are often called Likert scales after Rensis Likert. These inventories are widely used due to their ease of administration and cost-effectiveness. One of the most prominent examples is the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), initially developed in the 1940s to assess abnormal personality traits.

Personality disorders represent enduring cognition, affect, and behavior patterns that significantly deviate from societal norms. These maladaptive traits often lead to difficulties in various domains, including interpersonal relationships, occupational settings, and overall psychological well-being. Paranoid personality disorder and schizoid personality disorder are two distinct conditions marked by odd or eccentric behavior.

Narcissistic and avoidant personality traits represent two contrasting patterns of behavior that significantly influence social interactions and self-perception. While individuals with narcissistic disorder seek admiration and validation, individuals with avoidant personality disorder withdraw due to fear of judgment.
Characteristics of Narcissistic Personality Disorder

Personality Disorders: Dependent and Obsessive-Compulsive

38
Dependent personality disorder and obsessive-compulsive personality disorder are two separate psychological conditions that influence behavior, relationships, and overall life functioning. Though both involve maladaptive behaviors, their core characteristics and motivations differ significantly.
 Dependent Personality Disorder
Dependent personality disorder is characterized by an excessive reliance on others to manage various aspects of life. Individuals with this disorder often struggle...

    Area of Science:

    • Psychiatry
    • Psychology
    • Neuroscience

    Background:

    • Limited research exists on personality traits and psychopathology in individuals with borderline intellectual functioning, particularly concerning gender differences.
    • Borderline intellectual functioning (BIF) affects a significant population, yet its interplay with psychopathology and gender remains understudied.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate gender disparities in psychopathology and behavioral characteristics among individuals with BIF.
    • To compare psychopathology profiles of individuals with BIF to those with average intellectual functioning.

    Main Methods:

    • The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2-Restructured Form (MMPI-2-RF) was administered to 116 patients with BIF and psychopathology.
    • Restructured Clinical (RC) scale scores of BIF patients were compared to matched general population and average intelligence patient groups.
    • Gender comparisons were made within the BIF group and across different intellectual functioning and diagnostic groups.

    Main Results:

    • Female patients with BIF reported higher levels of internalizing emotional problems compared to males with BIF.
    • Females with BIF showed significantly more externalizing problems and thought disorders than average intelligent females with mental disorders.
    • Males with BIF did not differ significantly from average intelligent males with mental disorders in behavioral characteristics and symptoms.

    Conclusions:

    • Gender-sensitive approaches are crucial for assessing and treating psychopathology in individuals with BIF.
    • Female patients with BIF represent the most vulnerable group regarding the nature and severity of psychopathology.
