Accessory Structures of the Eye01:17

Accessory Structures of the Eye

1.5K
Optical perception, or vision, is an extraordinary sense dependent on converting light signals received via the ocular organs. These organs, known as eyes, are securely positioned within the bony cavities of the skull, called orbits. The orbits serve a dual purpose: a protective shield for the ocular globes and a stable attachment point for the soft ocular tissues. The eye's external protective mechanisms include the eyelids, which are edged with lashes that act as a barrier against foreign...

    Summary

Artificial intelligence (AI) assessed lower blepharoplasty outcomes. The surgery achieved an average of two years of rejuvenation, with men showing greater age reduction than women.

    Area of Science:

    • Plastic Surgery
    • Artificial Intelligence
    • Computer Vision

    Background:

    • Aesthetic standards are subjective.
    • Artificial intelligence (AI) offers objective assessment potential.
    • Lower blepharoplasty aims to improve aesthetic outcomes.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To objectively assess aesthetic outcomes of lower blepharoplasty using AI.
    • To enhance decision-making and understanding of surgical results.
    • To quantify the rejuvenating effects of lower blepharoplasty.

    Main Methods:

    • 150 patients undergoing lower blepharoplasty were analyzed.
    • FaceAge software with four convolutional neural network (CNN) models was used.
    • Preoperative and postoperative images were compared to estimate age reduction.

    Main Results:

    • All CNN models showed accuracy in age prediction.
    • Lower blepharoplasty resulted in an average of 2 years of rejuvenation (p<0.05).
    • Men experienced more significant age reduction than women; quadrilateral blepharoplasty had the most effect.

    Conclusions:

    • Deep learning models quantitatively confirm the age-reducing effects of lower blepharoplasty.
    • AI provides objective evidence for the efficacy of cosmetic surgeries.
    • AI can aid in evaluating surgical outcomes and patient satisfaction.
