Summary

Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) Cw2 antigen may protect against brucellosis. This study found a significant decrease in HLA-Cw2 in brucellosis patients, suggesting a protective role in this infectious disease.

Background:

  • Brucellosis is a significant zoonotic infection with diverse clinical manifestations.
  • Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) genes play a crucial role in immune responses and disease susceptibility.
  • Previous studies have explored HLA associations with various infectious diseases, but specific links to brucellosis remain incompletely understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between HLA class I and class II antigen frequencies and brucellosis.
  • To determine if specific HLA alleles are associated with susceptibility or protection against brucellosis.
  • To explore HLA associations with joint manifestations in brucellosis patients.

Main Methods:

  • HLA typing was performed on 106 patients diagnosed with brucellosis.
  • HLA class I and class II antigen frequencies were compared to those of healthy control groups (272 for class I, 102 for class II).
  • Specificities studied included 17 HLA-A, 31 HLA-B, 7 HLA-C, and 8 HLA-DR antigens.

Main Results:

  • A highly significant decrease in the frequency of the HLA-Cw2 antigen was observed in brucellosis patients compared to controls (p < 0.0001).
