The Sense of Self: Reflected Self-Appraisal and Social Comparison02:57

The Sense of Self: Reflected Self-Appraisal and Social Comparison

49.8K
According to Charles Cooley, we base our image on what we think other people see (Cooley 1902). We imagine how we must appear to others, then react to this speculation. We don certain clothes, prepare our hair in a particular manner, wear makeup, use cologne, and the like—all with the notion that our presentation of ourselves is going to affect how others perceive us. We expect a certain reaction, and, if lucky, we get the one we desire and feel good about it. But more than that, Cooley...

Social psychologists have documented that feeling good about ourselves and maintaining positive self-esteem is a powerful motivator of human behavior (Tavris & Aronson, 2008). In the United States, members of the predominant culture typically think very highly of themselves and view themselves as good people who are above average on many desirable traits (Ehrlinger, Gilovich, & Ross, 2005). Often, our behavior, attitudes, and beliefs are affected when we experience a threat to our...

Ethnic Identity within a Larger Culture

30
Adolescents from ethnic minority backgrounds face a multifaceted journey in forming their identities, shaped by the intersections of cultural expectations and personal exploration. For these adolescents, identity formation involves not only typical developmental challenges but also navigating the perceptions and attitudes of the majority culture. As they grow, adolescents in ethnic minority groups often become increasingly aware of stereotypes, social biases, and discrimination, all of which...

Adler's Individual Psychology

576
Alfred Adler, a prominent figure in psychology, founded the school of individual psychology. In contrast to Freud's emphasis on sexual or aggressive motives, Adler suggested that individuals are primarily motivated by their purposes and goals. He believed that people strive for perfection rather than pleasure. Adler argued that individuals could creatively act upon their genetic inheritance and environmental experiences to shape their own lives, emphasizing conscious motivation over...

Area of Science:

  • Educational Psychology
  • Positive Psychology
  • Teacher Training

Background:

  • Teachers require resilience to navigate educational and socio-economic challenges.
  • Pre-service teachers need effective resilience-building strategies during training.
  • Cognitive flexibility is a key factor influencing resilience.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the predictive relationship between cognitive flexibility and resilience.
  • To develop and evaluate a character strengths intervention for enhancing pre-service teachers' resilience and cognitive flexibility.
  • To examine the moderating role of mindset on the intervention's effectiveness.

Main Methods:

  • Cross-sectional study (n=273) to assess cognitive flexibility and resilience.
  • Multi-site field experiment (N=193) testing a character strengths intervention.
  • Analysis of mindset's impact on the intervention's effect on cognitive flexibility and resilience.

Main Results:

  • Cognitive flexibility significantly predicted resilience (Study 1).
  • The character strengths intervention significantly enhanced resilience and cognitive flexibility (Study 2).
  • A growth mindset moderated the indirect effect of the intervention on resilience via cognitive flexibility.

Conclusions:

  • Cognitive flexibility is a crucial component of teacher resilience.
  • Character strengths interventions can effectively build resilience in pre-service teachers.
  • Integrating resilience training into teacher education programs is recommended.
