    Summary

Sodium valproate effectively treated involuntary movements in patients with Sydenham's chorea. This promising drug led to the complete disappearance of choreic movements within one week of treatment.

    Area of Science:

    • Neurology
    • Pharmacology

    Background:

    • Sydenham's chorea is a neurological disorder characterized by involuntary movements.
    • Managing moderate to severe choreic movements presents a clinical challenge.

    Observation:

    • Five patients diagnosed with moderate to severe Sydenham's chorea were enrolled in the study.
    • Treatment involved the administration of sodium valproate.

    Findings:

    • All five patients experienced a complete resolution of choreic movements.
    • The therapeutic effect was observed rapidly, within one week of initiating sodium valproate treatment.

    Implications:

    • Sodium valproate demonstrates significant potential as a therapeutic agent for Sydenham's chorea.
    • Further research is warranted to confirm these findings and establish optimal treatment protocols.
