Immunological markers in acute leukaemia.

Summary

Immunological and morphological classifications of acute leukaemias show high correlation. Most cases (95%) align, but discrepancies exist in specific subtypes of acute lymphoblastic leukaemia and acute myeloid leukaemia.

Background:

Accurate classification of acute leukaemias is crucial for effective treatment.
Immunological and morphological methods are standard diagnostic tools.
Discrepancies between these methods can impact patient management.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the correlation between immunological and morphological classifications in acute leukaemias.
To identify specific subtypes where classification discrepancies occur.

Main Methods:

Classified 61 cases of acute leukaemia using both immunological and morphological criteria.
Analyzed correlations between immunological subclasses and FAB-subgroups for ALL and AML.

A high overall correlation (95%) was observed between immunological and morphological diagnoses.
No correlation was found between FAB-subgroups and immunological subclasses in 3 (5%) cases of ALL.
Specific FAB-subclasses in AML showed no correlation with myeloid antibodies, except for MY-7 which reacted with M4 and M5 leukaemia.

Conclusions:

Immunological and morphological classifications are largely consistent for acute leukaemias.
Further investigation is needed for the 5% of cases with discordant classifications, particularly in ALL and AML subtypes.
The MY-7 antibody shows potential for differentiating specific AML subtypes (M4/M5).
