Purpose of the Study:

  • To explore topics veterinarians discuss with clients concerning indoor-outdoor cats and One Health.
  • To analyze the perceived importance of these topics by practice location and between veterinarians and their clients.

Main Methods:

  • An online survey was distributed to U.S. veterinarians in 2022.
  • Data from 280 respondents were analyzed, focusing on topic discussion frequency and perceived importance.

Main Results:

  • 95% of veterinarians discussed indoor-outdoor cat activities with clients.
  • Cat-associated disease (81%), population control (64%), and trauma (53%) were the most frequent topics.
  • Veterinarians perceived dangers to cats as highly important (57% to self, 61% to client).
  • Only 13% of veterinarians were comfortable discussing One Health, with zoonoses and wildlife impacts discussed least often.

Conclusions:

  • Veterinarians prioritize discussing cat safety and population control over One Health topics.
  • Limited discussion of One Health represents a missed opportunity for client education and improved cat care.
  • Enhancing discussions on One Health could lead to more informed client decisions and better overall feline welfare.
