  • To identify demographic and clinical factors associated with moderate to severe cognitive symptoms.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional study analyzed data from 5078 adult cancer patients at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre (2013-2019).
  • Patient-reported symptom screening data were used to assess cognitive symptoms across 12 cancer types.
  • Multivariable logistic regression identified risk factors for moderate to severe cognitive symptoms.

Main Results:

  • 68.5% of patients reported cognitive symptoms; 30.4% reported moderate to severe symptoms.
  • Cognitive symptoms were most frequent in brain/CNS (86.5%) and least frequent in sarcoma (59.5%).
  • Moderate to severe cognitive symptoms were associated with CNS recurrence, depression, tiredness, drowsiness, anxiety, shortness of breath, female sex, first-line chemotherapy, and metastatic disease.

Conclusions:

  • Cognitive symptoms are prevalent across diverse cancer types and are associated with increased symptom burden.
  • Findings support integrating cognitive screening, assessment, and supportive care into outpatient oncology settings.
  • Addressing cognitive symptoms is crucial for comprehensive psychosocial care in cancer patients.
