Summary
This study determined color difference thresholds in dentistry, finding that males and laypersons tolerate greater lightness and chroma variations. Hue and chroma mismatches are less acceptable in dental color matching.
Area of Science:
- Dental Materials Science
- Color Science in Dentistry
- Visual Perception and Colorimetry
Background:
- Accurate color matching is crucial in restorative dentistry for aesthetic outcomes.
- Existing color difference formulas may not fully capture perceptual thresholds in the dental context.
- Understanding perceptibility (PT00) and acceptability (AT00) thresholds is vital for clinical application.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the perceptibility and acceptability CIEDE2000 thresholds for lightness, chroma, and hue differences in dentistry.
- To compare these thresholds between different observer groups (dentists vs. laypersons, males vs. females).
Main Methods:
- A psychophysical experiment using computer-simulated teeth on a calibrated display.
- Forty observers (dentists and laypersons) assessed simulated tooth color differences.
- Takagi-Sugeno-Kang Fuzzy Approximation model used to calculate CIEDE2000 perceptibility (PT00) and acceptability (AT00) thresholds.
Main Results:
- Specific 50:50% PT00 and AT00 thresholds were calculated for lightness (∆L00) and chroma (∆C00) under different weighting factors (KL=1 and KL=2).
- Hue difference thresholds (∆H00) were found to be largely incomputable.
- Significant differences observed between CIEDE2000 formulas, lightness vs. chroma metrics, and observer groups; no gender differences in lightness/chroma PT00.
Conclusions:
- Specific PT00 and AT00 for lightness and chroma are essential for evaluating color changes in the tooth color space.
- Observer experience and gender influence AT00 for lightness and chroma, with males and laypersons showing higher tolerance.
- Hue and chroma mismatches are less acceptable within the dental color space.

Phase-Contrast Microscopes
In-phase-contrast microscopes, interference between light directly passing through a cell and light refracted by cellular components is used to create high-contrast, high-resolution images without staining. It is the oldest and simplest type of microscope that creates an image by altering the wavelengths of light rays passing through the specimen. Altered wavelength paths are created using an annular stop in the condenser. The annular stop produces a hollow cone of...

Color Vision
544
Color perception begins in the retina, the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye. Two main theories explain how colors are seen: the trichromatic theory and the opponent-process theory. The trichromatic theory, proposed by Thomas Young in 1802 and extended by Hermann von Helmholtz in 1852, suggests that color vision is based on three types of cone receptors in the retina. These cones are sensitive to different but overlapping ranges of wavelengths corresponding to red, blue, and green.
