    Background:

    • External beam irradiation was initially used for palliative care of advanced prostate cancer in the 1930s.
    • Hormone deprivation became the primary treatment in the 1940s, but its limitations in achieving cures were later recognized.
    • The advent of advanced radiation technologies in the 1950s enabled the reintroduction of aggressive external beam irradiation for curative intent.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the long-term efficacy of external beam irradiation for prostate cancer.
    • To assess survival rates based on disease stage (localized vs. extracapsular extension).

    Main Methods:

    • Analysis of an extensive patient series initiated at Stanford in 1956.
