Behçet's disease presented with obscure gastrointestinal bleeding: A Palestinian case report

Gastrointestinal symptoms in Behçet's disease (BD) significantly increase mortality and morbidity. Early recognition and management are crucial for preventing complications, as diagnosis relies on clinical factors due to a lack of specific tests.

- Behçet's disease (BD) is a chronic, relapsing systemic vasculitis.
- It is characterized by mucocutaneous lesions and can affect multiple organs.
- Diagnosis is primarily clinical, lacking pathognomonic laboratory markers.
Observation:
- Gastrointestinal (GI) involvement in BD is associated with high mortality and morbidity.
- While ileocecal region is commonly affected, any part of the GI tract can be involved.
- Current methods for monitoring disease activity are suboptimal.
Findings:
- A case of a 38-year-old male with severe GI bleeding and symptoms suggestive of BD is presented.
- The patient presented with melena, hematochezia, fever, chills, and arthralgia.
- Episcleritis was observed during hospitalization, confirming the BD diagnosis.
Implications:
- Prompt diagnosis and management of GI symptoms in BD are critical.
- Effective strategies are needed to improve disease activity monitoring in BD patients.
- Further research into diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for GI BD is warranted.
