Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine the potential causal relationship between various fluid intakes (alcohol, coffee, tea, water) and the risk of developing atopic dermatitis (AD) and contact dermatitis (CD).
  • To provide insights into how dietary fluid patterns might influence the incidence of common skin disorders.

Main Methods:

  • A two-sample Mendelian Randomization (MR) analysis was conducted using genetic data from the UK Biobank and FinnGen r9 consortium.
  • Genetic variants served as instrumental variables to assess causal effects of fluid intake on AD and CD.
  • Inverse Variance Weighted (IVW), MR-Egger, and weighted median methods were employed, with heterogeneity and pleiotropy assessed using Cochran's Q, MR-Egger intercept, and MR-PRESSO tests.

Main Results:

  • Increased water intake was significantly associated with a higher risk of contact dermatitis (IVW OR = 2.92, p < 0.01).
  • Coffee consumption showed a positive association with increased contact dermatitis risk (IVW OR = 2.16, p = 0.01).
  • Tea intake demonstrated a significant protective effect against atopic dermatitis (IVW OR = 0.71, p < 0.01).

Conclusions:

  • Findings suggest water and coffee intake may elevate contact dermatitis risk, whereas tea intake may reduce atopic dermatitis risk.
  • Modifying fluid intake habits could be a potential strategy for dermatitis prevention.
  • Further longitudinal studies are recommended to validate and expand upon these causal associations.
